iPad App Review: Autodesk Sketchbook Pro

April 9th, 2010 No comments

One of the most amazing apps I have discovered as of yet is Autodesk Sketchbook Pro. I’m not much of an app “buyer” and tend to stick with mostly free or cheap stuff, but last night I decided to plunk down 8 bucks for this one, and I was not disappointed.

Sketchbook Pro For iPadThe sketchbook interface is well thought out and so easy to use once you spend a few minutes getting acquainted with. A 3 finger swipe to the left to undo, to the right to redo. Swipe down to bring up brush options and your color palette. swipe up to access the layers window. tap with 2 fingers to bring up the menu and brush size/opacity button. This button allows you to quickly change your brush radius / opacity by dragging on the X or Y axis.

Once you have all the gestures down, sketching is a dream. I thought drawing with my finger would be awkward, but after a little practice it feels totally natural. I may buy a stylus anyway though for more detailed drawing, although you have to wear a fingerless glove while using it so your hand doesn’t activate the touchscreen. If they could somehow implement pressure sensitivity with a stylus this would be a Wacom killer.

All in all this app is worth WAY more than the $7.99 it’s selling for. If you like to draw and have and iPad, it’s a must have.
